SEC Media Days are in Dallas, Texas next week, and South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is set to be joined by three of his seniors at the event.
Gamecock veterans Luke Doty, Alex "Boogie" Huntley, and Debo Williams will accompany their head coach to Texas and will have opportunities to speak to the media on behalf of their team. All three players are redshirt seniors who were part of the 2020 recruiting class (Doty and Huntley signed with USC out of high school, while Williams transferred to Carolina after a redshirt year at Delaware).
Doty, who i listed as an "athlete" on the official South Carolina football roster, has played both quarterback and wide receiver for the Gamecocks but is expected to be a receiver in 2024. No returning wide receiver had more catches for the team last year (13) and his 2 touchdowns from scrimmage trail only scatback Juju McDowell among returners.
Huntley has been among the Gamecocks' leaders in snaps at defensive tackle the past couple of seasons. Having played his high school ball at Hammond School in Columbia, he is a fan favorite on defense and will be part of the rotation at one of the deepest positions on the team. Joining with fellow tackles Tonka Hemingway and TJ Sanders, he also has been used in gadget packages on offense.
Williams is in his fourth year with the program, and his game has come a long way during his time in garnet and black. As a young player, he was aggressive and delivered a few big hits, but it wasn't until 2023 that he became a consistent and under-control performer at linebacker. He made several All-SEC teams as one of the top tacklers in the league, and he will have more help at linebacker this year thanks to transfer veterans Demetrius Knight and Bangally Kamara and the late-2023 emergence of Bam Martin-Scott and Jaron Willis.
At SEC Media Days, Coach Beamer will take the podium in front of the large media throng on the first day. Monday, July 15th will provide South Carolina football fans with plenty of opportunity to hear from Beamer and the three team leaders speak.
