How to watch, injury report for South Carolina football vs. Akron
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer and his team will welcome the Akron Zips to Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday. The Gamecocks and Zips have played one other time (a post-Clemson weather make-up game in 2018).
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM ET, and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU and streamed on the ESPN app. Williams-Brice is sold out, and there will be a few special things in store for fans as the Gamecocks will debut a new version of the light show and wear throwback uniforms to honor George Rogers' Heisman Trophy-winning 1980 season.
In addition to long-term ailments for defensive back Zahbari Sandy and offensive linemen Jakai Moore and Aaryn Parks, some key Gamecocks are dealing with injuries right now.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers got his lower leg rolled up last week against LSU, and he missed the final play of the 1st half and all but one drive of the 2nd half because of what Shane Beamer has called "an ankle sprain." Sprained ankles come with a wide range of recovery timetables, and Beamer's description of the injury has been vague. Sellers told his coaches that he believes he could play against Akron, but rest could be what is best for the redshirt freshman, especially ahead of a Bye week. On Friday, reports surfaced that Robby Ashford will start the game.
Defensive tackle TJ Sanders hurt his foot last weekend, and with how he struggled to bear weight in the injury's aftermath, some South Carolina football fans feared the worst. However, after a couple of days of limited updates, Coach Beamer's Thursday night injury update during "Carolina Calls" included a label of "good to go" regarding his redshirt junior defensive lineman.
Wide receiver Jared Brown, who has dealt with a hamstring issue and a potential ankle problem, left the LSU game, as well. He is leading the Gamecocks in receiving this year (both in terms of catches and yards), but according to each update from Beamer since Saturday, his status for this weekend is unknown.
Linebacker Bangally Kamara was added to the list of USC injuries, but the nature of what is wrong with him isn't clear. The SEC does not require their availability reports for non-conference matchups, so Beamer's Thursday night admission that Kamara is "in the same boat" as Brown and Sellers is the only update on his status.
Previous injuries to defensive back Emory Floyd, defensive end Gilber Edmond, and wide receivers Vandrevius Jacobs and Gage Larvadain do not appear to be issues moving forward.
