Former South Carolina basketball star wins another weekly honor
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina basketball legend A'ja Wilson is in the midst of one of the greatest WNBA seasons of all-time.
The former Gamecock is averaging 27 points per game, a number that never has been reached in the 28 years of the league's existence. In fact, 25 points per game has happened just once (25.29 points per game from Diana Taurasi in 2006).
Wilson also is on pace for the top rebounding effort in league history. Sylvia Fowles' record for total rebounds (404) is in play, though, it seems unlikely Wilson will top Fowles' rebounds-per-game mark (11.9). She also appears destined for the best season of blocks by any player not named Brittney Griner or Margot Dydek (the duo owns the top-7 block seasons in league history). Wilson is on pace to break up that top-7 monopoly, but reaching Griner's all-time record (129 total blocks, 3.7 per game) seems unattainable.
With how well she has played all season, it is no surprise that the Aces' new all-time leading scorer has racked up the WNBA awards this season. Wilson picked up Western Conference Player of the Month honors in both May and June, and on Tuesday, it was announced that she was the Western Conference Player of the Week for the third time.
The 19th selection for this honor in her career, Wilson continues inching her way toward Tina Charles' record of 33 selections. Despite being just 27 years old, Wilson already has tied Hall of Famer Lauren Jackson with her 19th Player of the Week pick.
Illustrating how dominant she has been, Wilson's numbers (25.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3.2 blocks, and 53% shooting) are similar or even lower than her season numbers. In other words, Wilson has played at Conference Player of the Week levels every week of this season.
In line for her 3rd MVP award and in contention for her 3rd WNBA Finals title, A'ja Wilson is well on her way to establishing herself as the greatest women's basketball player ever.
