Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin says he respects South Carolina but he clearly doesn't in latest comment
Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin has been talking a lot this season for having a team that is 9-3, not in the SEC Championship, and not in the College Football Playoff at the moment. The Rebels had a chance to secure their spot in the CFP but choked against the Florida Gators and now are not sure where they stand.
South Carolina did lose to Ole Miss earlier in the season, and it was the worst loss that South Carolina suffered this season, but when comparing resumes, the Gamecocks are easily ahead of the Rebels. However, Kiffin believes that just because Ole Miss beat South Carolina this season, the Rebels should easily be in the CFP over the Gamecocks.
This is a lot of big talk for a coach for a team that lost to the Florida Gators, a team whose booster contributors were pooling their money to fire their head coach earlier this season, Kentucky, a team South Carolina put a beat down on, and LSU, a team South Carolina most likely would have beaten is quarterback LaNorris Sellers had not gotten hurt.
Kiffin said in his statement that he had respect for South Carolina, but clearly, with what he said, he has zero respect for the Gamecocks. When looking at South Carolina's resume and Ole Miss' resume, the Gamecock's losses look much better than the Rebels'.
When looking at the Rebels' non-conference games, Ole Miss played three opponents that match up well against three of South Carolina's non-conference opponents. However, the fourth opponent is where things get interesting. Ole Miss played Wake Forest, who finished the season 4-8 this season, and South Carolina played No. 12 Clemson, who finished the season 9-3 and is in the ACC Championship game.
Now, looking at SEC play, Ole Miss played just two ranked opponents and went just 1-1 against them, losing to No. 10 LSU and beating No. 3 Georgia. South Carolina, on the other hand, faced six ranked opponents going 3-3 in those games, losing to No. 16 LSU, No. 12 Ole Miss, and No. 7 Alabama.
The three ranked losses that South Carolina suffered were their only three losses of the season, while Ole Miss lost to two unranked opponents and only one ranked opponent this season. It shows that South Carolina took care of business when they should have, and Ole Miss wasn't able to. Plus, when facing their rival Mississippi State, the Rebels didn't blow the worst team in the SEC out of the water like they should have.
So, yes, Lane Kiffin, you did beat South Carolina by a good margin, but when putting the resumes side by side, your item doesn't exactly matchup to South Carolina's as well as you think it does.
