South Carolina offensive coordinator Mike Shula met with the media on Wednesday to preview the Gamecocks' road game against Missouri, set for 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. Shula addressed questions about the struggles on the O-line, South Carolina's QB situation, and the team's search for consistency after a rocky start to the 2025 season.
Offensive Line Growth and Consistency
Shula acknowledged the early struggles of the offensive line, but he also emphasized improvement is happening behind the scenes. "Negative plays kill you," he said, stressing that keeping the ball moving forward is critical for the offense. While mistakes can often put the line in the spotlight, Shula pointed out that the unit is practicing hard and gaining experience, especially the new faces adjusting to the system.
Quarterback Updates
Shula did not give any direct answers about the availability of LaNorris Sellers, deferring to head coach Shane Beamer. Even though it was reported that Sellers was at practice on Wednesday, he has not officially been ruled to play on Saturday.
Shula praised backup QB Luke Doty's readiness in the press conference. He described Doty as a strong communicator who keeps his teammates in line and engaged. He also admitted that there are still some plays he'd like to have changed. If Doty starts for the Gamecocks, Shula expects the coaching staff to tailor the game plan towards him specifically, especially his strengths. Obviously, the goal is always to make QB transitions as seamless as possible.
Play-calling and Patience
When asked about adjustments, Shula stressed the importance of eliminating negative plays, sustaining drives, and building momentum in the game. He also noted there is a balance between patience and urgency: "The perfect game is still out there. You just keep asking players to be focused, keep the blinders on, and do their job."
Shula closed the presser by affirming his confidence in both the coaching staff and the players as South Carolina prepares for a tough Missouri defense on Saturday.
