Mike Shula didn't have to move too far for his newest offensive coordinator position; really, he just had to move down the hall, is what it seems like. Once South Carolina heard the news of Appalachian State hiring former USC OC Dowell Loggains as their new head coach, it didn't take log for head coach Shane Beamer to decide who his next OC would be.
Instead of bringing someone in from outside the program, Beamer chose to pick someone who had been integral to South Carolina's offensive success and the development of young quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
Beamer chose to hire offensive analyst Mike Shula as South Carolina's newest offensive coordinator, and it might just be one of the best decisions Beamer could have made. With Loggains up in the coordinator booth, Shula was on the field in 2024 talking with the players, especially Sellers during games.
Shula will bring a whole new level of experience as the offensive coordinator at South Carolina, with a lot of NFL experience working with big physical running quarterbacks such as Cam Newton and Josh Allen.
Sellers was happy about the promotion given to Shula, but for him, nothing was going to change.
"Maybe for them . For me, I can just talk to him, see what heβs thinking,β Sellers said in his press conference on Sunday.
Shula will be on the sideline for the Gamecocks in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, calling plays for South Carolina instead of up in the coordinator booth. Already being in the building is huge for Shula and the rest of the offense, as there isn't a big transition to a new offensive scheme, and all the players are familiar with the longtime coach.
