LaNorris literally puts the team on his back to take home the Palmetto Bowl Trophy
There are only four words to describe this year's Palmetto Bowl.
LaNorris Sellers is him!
The young redshirt freshman quarterback for South Carolina is the reason the Gamecocks are still alive for the College Football Playoff and that his team is bringing home the Palmetto Bowl trophy. Today's game was one highlighting both team's defenses as the game was 7-7 at halftime and the final score was 17-14 and it was South Carolina's defense that ended the game.
However, right now, all the attention is on Sellers, as other than a field goal scored in the fourth quarter, he is the sole reason the Gamecocks have any points on the board. The Clemson defense was playing tight in coverage, and the defensive line was constantly putting pressure on Sellers, but his athleticism adn ability to run scorched the Tigers.
Sellers had more rushing yards in this game than he did passing yards, but why fix something that isn't broken? Sellers threw for 164 yards and had one interception while he ran for 166 yards and had two rushing touchdowns, the only two touchdowns the Gamecocks scored all day long. Seller didn't have a perfect game as he had a fumble on the first drive, but he didn't let that affect him.
Both of Sellers' touchdowns were amazing runs where the young quarterback continually shook off tackles and used his size and athleticism to just barrel into the endzone.
Now, it is time to give the defense some love. Even though they were getting beat early in the game in the secondary, the defense stepped up big when they needed two, only allowing two touchdowns to the Tiger offense. It seemed as though South Carolina was going to lose the turnover battle until the second to last play of the game when Demetrius Knight Jr. intercepted a tipped pass to seal the game for South Carolina.
The defense also had Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik under pressure the majority of the game, but his ability to get passes off quickly and then use his legs when he needed to is what got the Gamecock defense in trouble a few times.
South Carolina did their job in keeping their College Football Playoff hopes alive with this win over No. 12 Clemson, which marks their fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. While the Gamecocks still may not get in, the one thing Gamecocks fans can revel in is the fact that they ruined Clemson's chances of getting in, which is almost just as good.
