The South Carolina Gamecocks' 2027 recruiting class is losing some serious momentum during the summer months. Just weeks after losing safety commit Jernard Albright to Florida State, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer has lost another big in-state target to an SEC rival.

On Tuesday morning, four-star running back David "Tre" Segarra announced his verbal commitment to Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers. He chose the Bayou Bengals over three other final schools in Stanford, Tennessee and the Gamecocks. The news was first reported by Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports/Rivals.

This is another big miss for Beamer and the Gamecocks on the recruiting trail. Perhaps the most glaring of reasons is that Segarra is rated as the No. 2 overall prospect out of the state of South Carolina. The 247Sports Composite rates Segarra as the No. 7 overall running back from the class of 2027. Beamer not being able to land one of the top in-state prospects, when Segarra even had a visit scheduled to Columbia on June 19 is another big red flag.

Segarra had visited LSU on June 5, and felt comfortable enough to shut down his recruitment and ultimately commit to Kiffin and the Tigers. His scheduled visit with the Gamecocks for this weekend is reportedly off the books.

The Gamecocks offered Segarra way back in January 2025, but he had yet to step on South Carolina's campus. To add insult to injury, LSU's offer for the big-time running back came on the same weekend he had his official visit with the Tigers.

While South Carolina's 2027 class does have a commitment from four-star running back Brayden Tyson, the coaching staff has reportedly been wanting to add at least one more back to its 2027 class. Outside of former 2024 signee Matt Fuller, the Gamecocks haven't signed a big-time running back in the last couple of cycles, so it is a big position of need in Columbia.

As for what's next for South Carolina, the Gamecocks can likely hold on to Tyson's commitment, or hope they can land one of the 12 other backs they have offered. Of those 14 total guys, six of them remain uncommitted, and 247Sports indicates their level of interest with South Carolina as "Cool."

If Tyson, a four-star prospect out of Snellville, Ga., ends up de-committing down the line, South Carlina is in big trouble at running back for 2027 and beyond.

The Gamecocks' 2027 class currently ranks 63rd nationally, and is second-to-last in the SEC. South Carolina, coming off a 4-8 season in 2025 means the Gamecocks need all the momentum they can get in 2026. Losing out to a new head coach inside the SEC to one of your biggest in-state talents doesn't exactlt do that, to say the least. We'll see if Shane Beamer can get this 2027 class back on track by landing some big names elsehwere.
