Kevin Schnall adds longtime Gamecock staffer Stuart Lake to baseball coaching staff

Stuart Lake spent several seasons with South Carolina as an assistant coach.

The South Carolina baseball season may be several months away, but new Gamecock head coach Kevin Schnall is busy building his new program. Schnall added the newest coach to his Gamecock coaching staff on Monday, as South Carolina officially announced that Stuart Lake would be joining Schnall's program. 

Lake, who will serve as South Carolina's Director of Program Development/Camp Coordinator, served for the Gamecocks as the program development director in the back half of the season for South Carolina last year. Previously, he worked for the Gamecock Club in addition to working as an analyst on the Gamecock Sports Network since 2024.  

The newest Gamecock coach is a South Carolina native who has spent most of the baseball and coaching career within the Palmetto State. He played college baseball at USC Salkehatchie and Newberry College, but graduated from Charleston Southern University in 1994. He started coaching as a high school assistant for four years before being hired by South Carolina baseball head coach Ray Tanner in 1999. He was in Columbia as an assistant through the 2002 season, during which he led the Gamecocks to a CWS Final appearance his last season with the Gamecocks. 

For the 2003 season, he coached as an assistant for his alma mater, College of Charleston. He spent 2004-2006 with Ole Miss as an assistant, helping lead Ole Miss to host three NCAA Regionals across those three seasons, going twice to the Super Regionals.  

After two seasons coaching as an assistant for The Citadel in 2007-2008, he was hired as the head coach at Charleston Southern. From 2009-2016 he was the head man there, finishing with a 179-262 record. 

He returned back to South Carolina in 2017-22, both coaching as an assistant and in his administrative role in Columbia. 

For Coach Schnall, hiring Stuart, who has longtime ties to both the South Carolina program and within the state is a no-brainer. Hiring a guy that also has several years experience within the Gamecock program is also a huge plus. Stuart joins a loaded South Carolina baseball staff, which includes big names like pitching coach Matt Williams and hitting coach Bill Cilento, who came over from Wake Forest. 

Congrats to Coach Lake on returning to Columbia, and welcome back home!
