The WNBA season begins a bit later this month, but rookies are getting some valuable reps during the preseason. One rookie that is doing just that is Indiana Fever rookie Raven Johnson.
Johnson, who the Fever selected No. 10 overall out of South Carolina during last month's WNBA Draft, has been impressing her coaches and teammates already. Despite the Fever losing 95-80 in the preseason game against the Dallas Wings on Thursday night, Johnson was a bright spot. She has five assists with five steals in a little over 21 minutes. She finished with three points on the night, but coming off the bench for Caitlin Clark at the point guard position was impressive.
“She’s a sponge,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said after the win. “She wants to learn. She wants to grow…She’s not afraid to ask questions. And I think her growth is going to come at a more rapid rate because of that…It’s a lot, and a lot comes at rookies fast in the W. I’m just pleased with how quickly she’s picking up things, and most importantly, how eager she is to learn and to grow.”
During the Fever's first preseason game against the New York Liberty on April 25, Johnson finished with six points, eight assists and three rebounds in just 18 minutes of playing time. She shot 100% from the floor, not missing a shot all night.
Next in the preseason, the Fever will play the Nigeria National Team on May 2 in what will mark the final game before the regular season tips off. Indiana will open the regular season on Saturday, May 9 against the Dallas Wings on the road at 1 p.m.
