South Carolina will open the 2025 college football season on a big stage, and with a legendary figure leading the way. When the Gamecocks face Virginia Tech in the Aflac Kickoff Game at the Merecedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, August 31, South Carolina will be represented by Heisman Trophy winner and former Gamecock George Rogers as the honorary captain. The Hokies will be represented by linebacker Divine Deablo.
Rogers remains one of the most iconic figures in Gamecock history. In 1980, he rushed for 1,894 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning the Heisman Trophy as the nation's top player. That same season, he led all of college football in rushing and guided South Carolina to an 8-4 record.
Known as "Big George," Rogers was more than a one-season wonder. He produced three 1,000-yard seasons, owns the two highest single-season rushing totals in program history, and reached the 100-yard mark in over 20 games. He closed his college career with 22 consecutive 100-yard performances.
After leaving Columbia, Rogers was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, and went on to win Rookie of the Year, earn All-Pro honors, and lead the NFL in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns during his career. He retired in 1988.
His legacy is cemented not just in South Carolina, but all across the nation. Rogers is a member of the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame, and the SEC Legends roster. Rogers is also a two-time All-American selection.
Now, more than four decades after bringing national recognition to the Gamecocks, Rogers will stand as a symbol of tradition and pride when head coach Shane Beamer and his 2025 squad begin their quest for a College Football Playoff berth. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
