South Carolina women’s basketball forward Ashlyn Watkins will miss the remainder of the 2024-2025 season due to a torn ACL in her left knee, sustained during the January 5 game against Mississippi State.

Watkins, a 6-foot-3 junior, has been a pivotal player for the Gamecocks, averaging 7.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.86 blocks per game this season. Her defensive prowess and athleticism have been instrumental in the team’s success.

The injury occurred early in the second quarter when Watkins landed awkwardly after a contested shot, immediately signaling distress and requiring assistance to leave the court.

An MRI confirmed the ACL tear, and she is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming weeks. Coach Dawn Staley faces the challenge of adjusting the team’s rotation in Watkins’ absence.

Freshman Joyce Edwards, averaging 10.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game, is expected to see increased playing time.

The Gamecocks, currently ranked No. 2 with a 14-1 record, will need to rely on their depth as they continue SEC play and prepare for upcoming matchups, including a significant game against No. 6 Texas.

Watkins’ injury is a significant setback for South Carolina, given her contributions on both ends of the court. Her teammates and coaches will look to rally in her absence, aiming to maintain their momentum and aspirations for a national championship.

The Gamecocks community extends its support to Watkins during her recovery and anticipates her return to the court in the future.
