Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks missed out on another target on the recruiting trail. Samari Matthews, a four-star cornerback from Hough High School in Huntersville, North Carolina, is officially heading to fellow SEC program, the Texas Longhorns. The 2026 prospect chose the Longhorns over South Carolina, Florida State, and Miami during his Friday night commitment announcement. He took official visits to all four finalist programs, but in the end Texas' consistent message won overall.
Matthews is ranked as the No. 9 cornerback and No. 70 overall player in the Class of 2026 by Rivals Industry Ranking. He is also the No. 6 player in the state of North Carolina. The 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back is known by his friends and family by "Smoke," and now he will be bringing the heat to Texas.
During his recruiting, defensive backs coach Torrian Gray and head coach Shane Beamer played a big role in making Columbia feel like home. After his visit, he told On3's Sam Spiegelman, “My comfort level is high as well. They are trending in the right direction and is something I can see myself being part of. South Carolina has been doing what that always have – making me feel like a priority. The message to me was what it’s always been – that they really want me to be a Gamecock.” Unfortunately, that feeling was outdone by Texas.
Matthew's commitment adds length, instincts, and playmaking ability to the Longhorns' defense, making him one of the most exciting pickups in recent memory.
