New South Carolina Gamecock head baseball coach Kevin Schnall is a busy guy these days. He was hired by Gamecock Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati just a few weeks ago, but he is already building his new program.

A big priority for Schnall in his early days is building an elite roster, including guys that can help him win early in 2027. Over the weekend, he did just that, as South Carolina welcomed back a familiar face via the transfer portal in pitcher Tyler Pitzer. Pitzer's name likely sounds familiar to Gamecock fans, as Pitzer played for South Carolina in 2024 and 2025, before transferring to Mississippi State prior to the 2026 season. Pitzer announced his return to South Carolina via a post on his Instagram of him in a Gamecock uniform.

For the Bulldogs, he went 2-3 as a starter, and finished with a 3.90 ERA. He had 38 strikeouts, and pitched 30 innings for Mississippi State. Across his two seasons with South Carolina he had a combined record of 8-1, including a 4-0 win-loss record in 2024-25. But that season he has an ERA of 6.99, finishing with a 4.74 as a true freshman in 2023-24.

Pitzer coming back to South Carolina makes plenty of sense. He will be reunited with his former pitching coach in Matt Williams, who was on the Gamecocks' staff when Pitzer was a true freshman in his first season in Columbia. Williams spent the last two seasons on Schnall's staff at Coastal Carolina. Pitzer is from McDonald, Pa., and played high school baseball at South Fayette Township.

In addition to landing Pitzer, Schnall also landed a pair of key recruits from the 2027 class, including pitcher Braden Richardson and Joseph Rutledge II.

Welcome back to South Carolina, Tyler! Hopefully the 2027 season will be your best one yet.
