It's been just a couple of weeks since the shocking announcement of former South Carolina baseball head coach Paul Mainieri stepping down. There are a multitude of replacement options for South Carolina Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati to consider.

But one name that should be at the top of his list is Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall. On Wednesday, the Chanticleers head coach was asked about his name being circulated as a replacement for Mainieri. His response didn't exactly shut down any rumors.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s amazing. We’re in week 11, and we’re already talking about jobs. What a world we’re in,” Schnall said as transcribed by On3Sports. “The only thing I can speak on with certainty is that our focus right now is extremely microscopic, and there are only two things that matter. Number one, what can we do to make this team better? Number two, what can we do to make this program better?

“I can assure you that there’s going to be nothing that’s going to distract us from our standards. There’s going to be nothing that’s going to distract us from our responsibility to lead these players and this team.”

"That said, the landscape of college baseball has changed drastically in the last two to three years. If you don't adapt and adjust to those changes. You will get ran over extremely fast. We’re very fortunate here at Costal Carolina to have tremendous leadership."

Schnall went on to call out Coastal's athletic director leadership and how they understand the resources needed to make the Coastal program competitive year in and year out.  Here's full video of Schnall's response:

Since Mainieri stepped down, the Gamecocks have been led by interim head coach Monte Lee, who was with the program from 2003-08, and returned in 2023. His team has gone just 2-5 on the season since Lee took over.

Schnall has cemented himself as one of the premier college baseball coaches in the country. He led the Chanticleers to the CWS Finals just last season, his first season as a head coach at Coastal. Previously, Schnall was an assistant at Coastal under longtime Chanticleers head coach Gary Gilmore, and helped lead the program to a CWS title in 2016. He spent three seasons at UCF as an assistant from 2013-15 before returning back to Coastal as the associate head coach in 2016. He was named Coastal's new head coach after Gilmore retired.

While it's obviously still very early in the collegiate baseball season, Schnall being asked about the open South Carolina job is no huge surprise. As the season goes through the late spring and early summer months, the Schnall-to-Columbia rumors will only continue unless Coastal extends him to a new contract.

Schnall has a 56-13 overall record as a head coach at Coastal.
