It's been less than a week since the shocking news that South Carolina Gamecocks head baseball coach Paul Mainieri would be stepping down. The news came just hours before game two of a three-game series last weekend against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
On Thursday evening, the details of his contract buyout with the school was revealed. David Cloninger of The Post and Courier reported that the school will be paying Mainieri $2.5 million.
According to Mainieri's contract, the head coach would have supposed to earn $3.9 million over the next three seasons. Via the newspaper, Mainieri would have been owed the entire remainder of his contract if he had been fired.
But since Mainieri is agreeing to resign, the $2.5 million appears to be a happy medium both sides can settle on.

The news of his settlement also comes just days after the head coach said in a recent interview that Gamecock fans and the media were impatient.
“The people here just got very impatient," Mainieri told Nola.com's Koki Riley. "I'm not talking necessarily even about the athletic director. He was great,” Mainieri said. “But I think (the people) above him, and I think the fans and the media, everybody here was pretty impatient.
Mainieri, who is 68 years old, leaves South Carolina with a 1,545-817-8 overall record, although he left Columbia with just a 40-40 mark with the Gamecocks. He spent most of his career at LSU, where he helped lead the Tigers to a College World Series title in 2009.
Under interim head coach Monte Lee, the Gamecocks are 1-2, and will go on the road to face the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs this weekend. South Carolina is still getting to get its first series victory in SEC play.
