CFP committee just screwed South Carolina with latest playoff rankings
South Carolina did all it could in their late-season push to make the College Football Playoff, but in the end, the playoff committee just didn't care about resumes. Even though South Carolina is clearly a better team than Ole Miss and Alabama right now and has better resumes than both teams, the Gamecocks are still behind both teams in the rankings.
The committee released its latest College Football Playoff rankings last night and set the world on fire with a few of their rankings. The team that probably got the short end of the stick was South Carolina, as they came in ranked No. 14, effectively out of the playoff unless something absolutely insane happens.
Even after a huge win over No. 12 Clemson, a team ranked higher than South Carolina in the previous ranking, the Gamecocks only moved up one spot from last week, whereas a team like Alabama, who beat a 6-5 Auburn team only by 14 points, moved up two spots and is in the playoff, even though their wins and losses are not as good as South Carolina's.
While South Carolina did start behind the eight-ball with three losses midway through the season, they were clearly one of the best teams in the last part of the season, and the committee refuses to see that. The Gamecocks faced one of the toughest schedules in the SEC, playing seven ranked teams this season, going 4-3 in those games.
The Gamecocks did not lose a single game to an opponent outside the Top 25 rankings while both Ole Miss and Alabama did. South Carolina beat Kentucky, who beat Ole Miss, and they also beat Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, who beat Alabama. Yes, the Gamecocks lost to both Ole Miss and Alabama, but when comparing the resumes, there is no comparison.
South Carolina got snubbed and everyone knows it, but don't worry, Shane Beamer knows how to keep receipts.
