One team will take home one of the WNBA's biggest prizes—the league's Commissioner's Cup Championship— on Tuesday evening. The Las Vegas Aces travel to take on the New York Liberty at home with a shot at the championship, as well as a $500,000 prize.
In the sixth year of the WNBA's Commissioner's Cup, this year's final includes two heavyweights in the Aces and Liberty. Las Vegas are the reigning WNBA champions from last season, led by last year's MVP in A'ja Wilson, who leads the league in scoring, averaging 25.7 points per game. The Aces also have a trio of guards in Jackie Young, Kennedy Carter and Chelsea Gray, as Las Vegas is tied atop the league in shooting percentage, getting 48.8% from the floor on the season.
Unfortunately for the Aces, they will be without their leading scorer, as the Aces ruled Wilson out on Tuesday morning. Wilson appeared to roll her ankle during the Aces game against Chicago on Sunday.
For the Liberty, a big storyline this season is star Sabrina Ionescu's health. She has been dealing with ankle and back injuries that have limited her to just 9.8 points per game in eight contests. Breanna Sewart has picked up the offense, averaging 19.2 points per game with another 8.5 rebounds per game. But New York did beat the Aces 87-76 just last week, on June 23. Perhaps even more impressive is that the Liberty took care of business on the road in that one. Now, New York gets home field advantage.
The winner of Tuesday night's matchup will get a shiny gold trophy, and a whopping $500,000 to be split evenly amongst the winning team's players
Believe it or not, these two WNBA heavyweights have played for this title before, back in 2023. That year, the Liberty won 82-63.
