2024 Post-Week 8 12-team College Football Playoff prediction and seeding

NCAA staff writer Ericka Brockish makes her prediction of who will make the College Football Playoff at the end of the season.

With each passing week of the college football season, certain teams that seemed like locks to make the playoff suddenly fall, and teams that no one thought would even be considered for the playoff are suddenly in contention. Week 8 brought even more upsets, and for the fourth straight week, the No. 1 ranked team was taken down as the number of undefeated teams continues to dwindle.

The SEC no longer has an undefeated team this season, and it seems as though the Big Ten might be dethroning the mighty conference. The Oregon Ducks are now the fifth No. 1 team this season as the Big Ten has now taken over three of the top 5 spots of the AP Top 25 teams. At this point, though, the Ducks better hope they don't continue the trend of No. 1 teams losing.

So, after another crazy week of college football, here is my prediction of which teams will make the College Football Playoff at the end of the season.

Just like the AP poll, there is yet another new No. 1 in town with this prediction as the Oregon Ducks officially take over the No. 1 spot. The Ducks don't have an easy matchup with week either with a ranked matchup against Illinois, so sorry Ducks fans if this No. 1 spot is a curse and they now lose.

The Big Ten is dominating this prediction, with Ohio State and Penn State taking those top spots after the auto bids. There is also a new Big Ten team in the mix this week, with the Indiana Hoosiers making their first appearance in the prediction rankings as they are also undefeated, and head coach Curt Cignetti is showing he is for real.

The SEC took a hit this week as Texas fell hard to Georgia, and the Bulldogs took their rightful sport as the eventual SEC Champions. Don't sleep on LSU this season, as the Tigers are playing good football right now, but Alabama officially fell out of these rankings after the loss to Tennessee, which earned the Volunteers their spot back in these rankings.

Iowa State also fell out of the rankings this week as the Cyclones struggled to beat a bad UCF team at home in Ames. Notre Dame is hanging around right now as they don't have the toughest schedule and are still winning games. Boise State is also still the highest-ranked Group of Five team, giving them the No. 12 spot with the auto bid.
