South Carolina Football: Top in-state player to commit this weekend
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football recruiting has been good under head coach Shane Beamer. Some Gamecock are worried, though, that USC’s 5-7 season could negatively affect those efforts moving forward.
The first “test” of that theory could be coming soon. On Monday, class of 2025 4-star in-state defensive lineman Amare Adams announced that he had his commitment date set.
Adams announced on his Twitter/X account that this Sunday, December 3rd, he will be announcing his college decision.
The big defensive tackle from South Florence High School is ranked as the highest-rated prospect in the state of South Carolina by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals and has the third-highest ranking according to On3. South Florence is the same school that produced current Gamecock 4-star freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers and 2025 wide receiver commitment Jayden Sellers.
As a player, Adams is an athletic defensive tackle who has some experience playing outside at defensive end, as well. A basketball player, too, Adams has good feet and some burst off the line of scrimmage.
The Gamecocks have long been considered a lean for Adams, so optimism is fair, but he is far from a lock to join the South Carolina football program. He has taken plenty of trips around to other programs, including some big unofficial visits this fall during football season.
South Carolina needs some young defensive tackle talent on the roster in a big way. Outside of three redshirt freshmen, the Gamecocks’ defensive tackles are all in their third year of college or later, and as of now, there are no interior defensive line commitments in the Gamecocks’ ’24 class, either, though they are in the hunt for a couple of guys at the position.
Adams would help fill the void left by the departures of Tonka Hemingway, TJ Sanders, and Boogie Huntley over the next couple of seasons.
