South Carolina Football: Gamecocks make top list for elite prospect, son of NFL star
By Kevin Miller
South Carolina football fans have gotten several pieces of good news in recruiting the class of 2025 over the past week.
The nation’s top prospect (5-star offensive tackle David Sanders) will be visiting this weekend, elite 4-star pass rusher Zahir Mathis named the Gamecocks a finalist, big-time 5-star offensive lineman Solomon Thomas also named USC a finalist, and high 3-star wide receiver Jayden Sellers (brother of Gamecock quarterback LaNorris Sellers) announced his commitment.
On Wednesday, the influx of positivity continued for the South Carolina football program as another 4-star prospect announced that USC was in his top group of schools. 4-star tight end Logan Brooking announced a top-8 that included the Gamecocks.
Brooking’s top-8 included South Carolina, Clemson, Florida, Michigan, Miami, North Carolina, Stanford, and Penn State.
Brookings attends Savannah Christian Prep, the same school where current South Carolina football commitment David Bucey plays. Savannah Christian is also home to priority Gamecock target Elijah Griffin (5-star defensive tackle). He is the son of five-time Pro Bowler and potential future Hall of Famer Keith Brooking who played at Georgia Tech in college.
As a player, the younger Brooking does play some on the defensive side of the ball like his father. He is an athletic defensive end who can make some plays on the EDGE, but his collegiate future is likely at tight end.
As a tight end, he is a unique prospect. He spends most of his snaps lined up outside as a receiver. He is athletic enough to get a lot of his targets in the screen game, but he is big enough that he is a legitimate jump ball threat in the red zone.
Though he lines up outside a lot, Brooking is a willing and high-effort blocker when lined up with his hand in the dirt. As he keeps filling out, he will become an even better blocker and more complete player at the tight end position.
