South Carolina Football vs. Furman:
Grades for the defense

B. The Gamecock defensive line did not get pushed around by the Furman front like they did against North Carolina. South Carolina was not a group of world-beaters up front, but they did hold a good Furman rushing attack to under 100 total yards on the ground. They also picked up 2.5 sacks (TJ Sanders and Jordan Strachan each had a solo sack; Tyreek Johnson shared one with defensive back DQ Smith). TJ Sanders and Jordan Strachan had good games.. . South Carolina Gamecocks. DEFENSIVE LINE

B-. USC’s linebackers were fine on Saturday. Both Stone Blanton and Debo Williams were good enough but didn’t make any great plays other than a big hit by Williams on a Furman run play. Pup Howard didn’t play much but still made three tackles, providing some hope for his future role on the team.. . South Carolina Gamecocks. LINEBACKERS

B. The defensive backfield was better for most of the night against Furman than in week 1. The gaudy tackling numbers weren’t there for DQ Smith and Jalon Kilgore because the defense got Furman off the field more efficiently, but Kilgore still led the team in tackles. Smith picked up 0.5 a sack (shared with Tyreek Johnson), and the unit held up well without Nick Emmanwori and David Spaulding for the whole game, OD Fortune for a stretch, and Keenan Nelson, Jr. for most of the contest. Vicari Swain, Judge Collier, and Emory Floyd, Jr. got a lot of snaps that could prove to be valuable experience moving forward.. . South Carolina Gamecocks. SECONDARY
