South Carolina football is almost two weeks into fall camp, and there has been a very notable name absent from most practice activities. Wide receiver Antwane “Juice” Wells has been out and is expected to remain out this week, as well.

Late last week, in one of his media availabilities, Shane Beamer didn’t sound all that concerned when talking about Wells, and, now, the preseason All-American is echoing the same sentiment.

In a tweet to his personal Twitter account, Wells downplayed the severity of the lower-body injury that has been keeping him away from the field.

“I’m great” is not a statement from Wells that sounds unsure about whether or not he will be ready for the Gamecocks’ week one matchup with the North Carolina Tar Heels. In fact, between Beamer’s words and Wells’ tweet, South Carolina football fans should feel confident that #3 will be ready to go on September 2nd in Charlotte.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed when talking about injuries. However, the way this particular injury is being handled, it seems most likely that the Gamecock coaching staff is just being overly cautious with the team’s star wide receiver.

Earlier this offseason, the former James Madison transfer was named to two major preseason award watch lists.

First, Wells was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award which is given to the nation’s top player (typically on offense) every season. Because of that, it was no surprise when he was also named to the preseason watch list for the Biletnikoff Award won by the nation’s top pass catcher each year.

If Wells’ injury really is as insignificant as he and Shane Beamer are making it out to be, there is no reason to suspect that he won’t be in full contention for both awards at season’s end.
