Former South Carolina football player Jadeveon Clowney was caught throwing the shoe of an opponent after making a third down stop in Cleveland’s Monday Night Football matchup versus Pittsburgh.

The shoe toss wound up being costly for the Browns. Rather than holding the Steelers to a long field goal attempt on fourth down, Pittsburgh was awarded an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which resulted in a free set of downs.

The Steelers promptly scored a touchdown just a few plays later to take a 7-0 lead in the contest.

Former South Carolina football player makes headlines for the wrong reasons

Clowney joined the Browns roster earlier this year, teaming up with Myles Garrett to form one of the NFL’s top pass rushing duos.

Prior to his time in Cleveland, the star defensive end played for Houston, Seattle, and Tennessee. He was the top overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft after wrapping up an All-American career at South Carolina.

Clowney played for three seasons in Columbia under head coach Steve Spurrier. He finished sixth in the Heisman voting as a sophomore, recording 13 sacks and 23.5 tackles for loss. He owns South Carolina’s all-time record for sacks in a single season.

He’s best known for “The Hit” in the 2012 Outback Bowl versus the Michigan Wolverines. After the Gamecocks were seemingly gipped out of a turnover on downs, Clowney took matters into his own hands. The defender burst through the line of scrimmage and nearly decapitated running back Vincent Smith. The play forced a fumble which Clowney swiftly recovered.

Unfortunately for Clowney, this recent play with the Browns saw another piece of equipment go flying. Cleveland will hope to overcome the blunder and dig out of the early deficit.
