The South Carolina football program is in the process of adding talent to its current roster with the Early Signing Period in full swing. Unfortunately, they’ve learned that some talent will be leaving Columbia next season, too.
Starting quarterback Jason Brown has opted to enter the transfer portal following his lone season at South Carolina. He finished up his coursework this year and will be a graduate transfer for his final year of eligibility. As a graduate, he’ll be immediately eligible to play next season.
Brown came to South Carolina as a transfer from FCS program St. Francis. With the Red Flash, Brown set single season program records as a sophomore. He chose to transfer after the football team cancelled its 2020 season amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
With the Gamecocks, he began the year as the third-string option off the bench but landed a starting role in early November. Brown led the Gamecocks to a 40-17 win over SEC East rival Florida in his first start. He followed that up by helping his team clinch bowl eligibility with a win over Auburn.
On the season, the gunslinger threw for 721 yards and eight touchdowns. He completed 56% of his passes and went 2-2 as a starter. He is able to play in the Gamecocks’ bowl against North Carolina though his status for the game is still up in the air. Brown hasn’t yet decided on his next destination.
While Brown is out, the Gamecocks are welcoming in former five-star prospect Spencer Rattler to take over under center. Rattler transferred from Oklahoma following the conclusion of the 2020 season. He will likely assume Brown’s starting role next year.
