Previewing South Carolina football’s week 2 matchup

Matchups to Watch

South Carolina OL vs. East Carolina DL

South Carolina’s offensive line left a bit to be desired last weekend against Eastern Illinois. While the final numbers looked good (254 rushing yards, 439 total yards), the Panthers were able to penetrate the offensive front far too many times. That penetration led to a number of plays in which the Gamecocks lost yardage, including a sack that resulted in a turnover.

The Gamecocks’ biggest advantage on offense is the rushing attack, but if the line can’t open up holes for its running backs, success will be hard to find.

As for East Carolina, its starting defensive front includes three underclassmen. That’s not a recipe for success against the SEC’s reigning rushing champion. Keep an eye on the battle in the trenches, it will be the most important matchup of the game.

Holton Ahlers vs. South Carolina secondary

Ahlers is a great player and the Gamecocks are still a little short handed in the back end of the defense. South Carolina has pieced together a group of transfers to fill the departures from last year’s roster. Gone are Jaycee Horn, Jammie Robinson, Israel Mukuamu, and John Dixon. Only Cam Smith returns starting experience at corner, while RJ Roderick, Jaylan Foster, and Jaylin Dickerson will rotate at safety.

While the group played well last weekend, this will be a much tougher test. Ahlers threw for nearly 300 yards last weekend, connecting on big scoring plays of 63 and 38 yards. The Pirates should come out of the gates angry, and they’ll look to get on the scoreboard early by airing it out. Can the Gamecocks’ secondary match up?

Prediction

We’re taking the Gamecocks to cover the one-point spread and escape with a hard-fought road victory. They’ll use the rushing attack to control the clock, keep the ball out of Holton Ahlers’ hands, and wear down a poor defense.

East Carolina will undoubtedly find success on offense, but if the Gamecocks can create some pressure in the backfield and force a couple of turnovers, it could change the game. Also look for some creativity on special teams.

Our prediction is that the Gamecocks pull away with a late fourth-quarter score to win by double digits.
