South Carolina football: Is Will Muschamp on the hot seat?
By Jacob Elsey
South Carolina football recruiting has been on the uptick under Will Muschamp.
REASON 4: Recruiting: past, present, and future
Argue what you will about the on-field product that Will Muschamp has rolled out over the last few seasons, but you can’t deny his recruiting abilities. The Gamecocks have finished with top 20 classes each of his years at the helm, pulling in three five-star prospects over the last two cycles.
He’s brought in four four-star talents at quarterback, the program’s top defensive line prospect since Jadeveon Clowney, the second-best running back recruit in school history, and a multitude of four-star players at wide receiver and on the defensive line.
This year’s class, on paper, seems to be a little behind previous cycles, but Muschamp still has the Gamecocks in the conversation for big-time prospects around the southeast. And looking ahead to 2022, Muschamp has already secured the pledge of the nation’s top dual threat signal caller.
Typically, when teams get a highly rated quarterback prospect in the class early, it attracts other talented skill players to the program, as they want to benefit from playing in an exciting offense with a gifted passer. Getting Gunner Stockton in the boat now is crucial in what could end up being the Gamecocks’ best group of the Muschamp era. Axing the head coach would have a significant impact on the class’s potential.
Final Verdict:
Unless the Gamecocks go winless, it’s hard seeing Will Muschamp being let go. On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d probably put the heat on about a 3 or 4. Things obviously can change as the season goes on, but as long as the offense shows growth and the recruiting continues to trend in the right direction, expect to see Will Muschamp on the South Carolina sidelines for at least the next couple of years.
