TENNESSEE

The Gamecocks came into the game riding a two-game winning streak, and winners of five of their previous six matchups.  They’d look to avenge an earlier season loss to the Vols, where Tennessee escaped with a 56-55 victory in Knoxville.

The game would turn out to be another low-scoring slugfest, with teams trading first half blows.  Despite having trouble slowing down Tennessee big man John Fulkerson, Carolina would go into the half with a 30-29 lead.  The second half would remain close, and the Gamecocks took a late lead with 22.4 seconds left on the clock.

On the Vols’ next possession, Fulkerson would be called for a charge (which is fitting considering how the first matchup ended), giving the ball back to South Carolina.  They’d build the lead to 63-60 after free throws, giving UT one last opportunity to tie.

The Gamecocks would foul, putting Charleston native Josiah James on the stripe.  He would make the first, intentionally miss the next, grab his own rebound, and nearly tie the game with a jump shot as time expired.  The shot clanked off the iron, and Frank Martin and Co. escaped with a huge win.
