The South Carolina Gamecocks are rebuilding after a down 4-8 season in Columbia. To head coach Shane Beamer's credit, he has done plenty of positive rebuilding this offseason.Â
Although Coach Beamer admits he is squarely on the hot seat entering 2026, there is plenty of optimism surrounding the Gamecocks heading into the season. One big reason for that is players that South Carolina brought in from the transfer portal. Per the 247Sports rankings, the Gamecocks' hauled in the No. 19 transfer portal class in the country this offseason.Â
The headliner of Beamer's portal class is unquestionably offensive tackle Jacarrius Peak, who spent the first three seasons of his career at N.C. State. In ESPN's new transfer portal player rankings, Peak checked in as the No. 6 overall player in this year's transfer portal.Â
"You rarely see offensive tackles as experienced as Peak pop up in the transfer portal," ESPN's Matt Olson writes of Peak. "The former three-star recruit from Valdosta, Georgia, developed into a 33-game starter for the Wolfpack and earned honorable mention All-ACC recognition as a junior. Peak made the move from right to left tackle in 2025 and has surrendered only four sacks in more than 1,100 career snaps in pass protection, according to ESPN Research."
The last stat for Peak is absolutely massive for South Carolina. Returning starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers looked unsteady last season. A big reason for that was likely the 43 sacks his offensive line gave up last season, which was 131st in the nation last year. It was also a season-high sacks for Sellers.Â
With Peak anchoring the offensive line, Sellers will have plenty of time to find his favorite target, returning receiver Nyck Harbor. Under new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles scheme, having better pass protection should also help Sellers immensely when he takes off on the run. Last season, the quarterback finished with a career-low 270 yards with five touchdowns. Although Peak suffered a knee injury that limited him in the spring, Coach Beamer has said multiple times that he is ahead of schedule.Â
In addition to landing Peak, Coach Beamer also landed offensive lineman Emmaniel Poku and offensive tackle Armando Nieves. Also coming to South Carolina via the transfer portal this cycle include big-time prospects like running backs Christian Clark from Texas and Jabree Coleman via Penn State and wide receiver Nitro Tuggle from Purdue.Â
Of course, player acquisition is just one piece of the rebuilding puzzle for college football teams across the country. If South Carolina doesn't at least make a bowl game this season, it will likely result in the end of Beamer Ball in Columbia.Â
But if Peak even slightly lives up to the headlines he's been making this offseason, South Carolina's offense is in for a massive improvement. Â
