In the first edition of the 2026 College Football Playoff rankings, the Gamecocks premiered at 21.

It’s a stunning feat given that barely over a month ago, many fans were calling for a coaching change and a disappointing season felt inevitable. But the Gamecocks rallied together and have put together a three-game win streak anchored by wins over fellow Top-25 teams, Florida and Tennessee. Put all that together, and you get the necessary data points for the committee to reward the Gamecocks.

So, what to make of the Gamecocks’ ranking? Trying to get in the mind of the committee feels like trying to write an essay in a foreign language, but we’re college football fans, so we’re going to try anyway.

South Carolina fans should be cautiously optimistic

The energy of the fanbase is high, excited, and cautiously optimistic. South Carolina is playing as well as anyone in the country right now, but the team has three losses, two of which came in gut-wrenching fashion, so there is scar tissue. It seems the committee felt the same. The Gamecocks are the highest-ranked team with three losses, which seems to be the sticking point for missing the top-20.

As a fan, I view the 21st ranking as pretty appropriate, given the hole the Gamecocks dug out of, but also because right now South Carolina is in the hunt. The next couple of weeks are going to be chaotic in the SEC and beyond, which will mean that teams currently above South Carolina will have suffered blows as well.

The CFP Committee sent a mixed message

At the same time, it is a bit of a mixed message (see earlier point about foreign language). Do I think there are 20 teams that are better than South Carolina? Frankly, no.

Two of South Carolina’s losses are teams currently in the Top-10. One of which was by one point. The committee has said they take roster and coaching situations into their evaluations; well, have you seen LaNorris Sellers lately? Have you heard of Dylan Stewart? Or considered his injury recovery from earlier in the year? The Gamecocks are a team littered with talent worthy of a top-15 spot at the minimum.

Of course, by season’s end, the rankings will look drastically different, but it is worth noting that this year’s team is ahead of the 2024 team, which finished just outside the Playoff and ranked 15th. That season, the Gamecocks did not make the initial Top 25, and it felt as if the team was behind the eight ball in vying for legitimacy as a playoff contender.

There’s a lot of football between now and the end of the year, but if the Gamecocks can handle their business, everything is there for the taking. In the words of Al Davis “just win, baby!”

South Carolina takes on Texas A&M this Saturday with kickoff set for 3pm EST.
