Steve Spurrier stirs the pot over Arch Manning in only the way the HBC can

Leave it to Steve Spurrier to casually question why Arch Manning didn't play more at Texas. He says he wasn't throwing shade, but the HBC's honesty is well...honest.

Legendary former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier has never been one to hold his tongue, especially when there is a microphone in front of him. And last week, some classic Spurrier lit up social media. The Head Ball Coach made waves when he questioned why Texas quarterback Arch Manning didn't see the field more last season while Quinn Ewers struggled at times for the Longhorns.

Spurrier joined Pat Dooley recently on the Another Dooley Noted Podcast to clarify what exactly he meant, and true to form, the HBC didn't hold back.

“That’s what I heard. I heard that went national,” Spurrier said with a chuckle. “I wasn’t trying to criticize anybody. But it’s just a different viewpoint than I had as a coach.” His point? If a QB is struggling, and you have another one who can go, why not make the switch?

Spurrier then doubled down on his philosophy, likening it to baseball of all things: “If your starter can’t throw strikes, you go to the bullpen. But in football, a lot of coaches just won’t sub.”

The HBC even shared a story about a backup left tackle who got his shot under Spurrier's system and made the most of it. That open-door mentality extended to every position on the roster, even the quarterback. And he made it very clear that he is not Sarkisian, but in typical Spurrier fashion, the old ball coach left us with a zinger:

“If Arch was better than the other guy… how come he didn’t play?”
