The South Carolina Gamecocks have added another national championship to its trophy case. Over the weekend on Saturday, the Gamecocks won their fourth national title in equestrian. South Carolina needed a tiebreaker to beat No. 2 Texas A&M, but came out on top in Ocala, Fla.

During Saturday's meet, the Gamecocks never trailed, leading 4-1 after the Reining event. True freshman rider Emily Patton took the first of four straight Gamecock points with a career-high 73.7 score, beating out the Aggies' Mattie Gustin.

Although Texas A&M cut into the Gamecocks' lead to make it 4-3 after the Horsemanship event, South Carolina closed it out with three straight points. Senior Carly Jenkins defeated Texas A&M’s Kaitlyn Bloom, 77.7-76.7, and fellow senior Alyssa Jipping beat out A&M's Kaylynn Heitman 76.3-73.8. Junior Alexis Potts made it 7-3 with a 76.8-74 win over Ady Kallay.

On the Flat event, South Carolina extended its lead to 9-3, but Texas A&M cut into it, cutting it to 9-7 entering the first leg of the Fences portion of the meet. Sophomore Amira Kettaneh, who dropped a Flat point in the previous event, won the meet-clinching point for South Carolina, beating A&M’s Logan Thomas, 84.7-40. Although Texas A&M won the last three points of Fences to even it at 10-all, South Carolina won the tiebreaker with a higher overall score of 1696.08-1473.00.

“I’ve been coaching at this level for 16 years," South Carolina head coach Carol Gwin said in the school's official release. "And I really think this weekend has been the most thrilling weekend of them all. This group has been so much fun to coach, and they’ve done everything we’ve asked of them all season long, and it was such a thrill to see all of their hard work pay off this weekend with a National Championship.”

This marks South Carolina's fourth national title in the sport, winning in 2015, 2007 and 2005.

Congrats to the Gamecocks on a huge victory!
