The South Carolina Gamecocks will be without two players as the team seeks a third-straight victory over Oklahoma on Saturday.
On Thursday evening, just two days before the Gamecocks are set to kick off, South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer announced that Gamecock running back Jawarn Howell and defensive back Quay'Sheed Scott will both be out for Saturday's game. Coach Beamer gave the update during his weekly radio show, stating that both guys will be out for the game against the Sooners.
“It will say that ‘Sheed is out again this week,” Beamer said via Gamecock Central. “He’s got some tests that have to get done tomorrow, and we’re optimistic on what those test will say, and if they say what we hope it’s going to say, he’ll be playing next week against Texas A&M. Jawarn won’t play Saturday; he banged his shoulder up, I guess Wednesday, in practice last week or maybe it was Friday, but late in the week. He was available last week in the Tennessee game, just has still been bothering him, and we thought the best thing for him was just still to be able to rest that shoulder a little bit this week and get that healthy. So those two are out.”
Scott has not played since South Carolina's Oct. 3 game at home against the Kentucky Wildcats. The Gamecocks starting nickelback left the game and did not return, even having to be hospitalized as a precaution. Coach Beamer has not disclosed the specifics regarding his injury.
Howell has also missed time this season with an injury, as he did not play in last week's win over Tennessee. Although his status changed from doubtful to questionable throughout the week last week ahead of the game against the Vols, he was ruled out and did not play.
The running back has been a nice complement to South Carolina's backfield, led by Jabree Coleman and Matt Fuller. Through four games, Howell has rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries, averaging 5.8 yards per rush.
Scott has nine total tackles with three passes defended so far this season.
South Carolina will have a tough task going on the road against Oklahoma. The Sooners have notched victories over Texas and Mississippi State this season, and have the same record as South Carolina at 4-3.
The Gamecocks are listed as 3.5-point road underdogs.
