The South Carolina Gamecocks fell to 2-2 on Saturday night, after falling 49-18 to No. 8 Alabama on the road. The Tide led 21-3 midway through the second quarter, and never really looked back from there. It was 35-10 at halftime, and South Carolina gave up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The defensive struggles were a continuation of the Gamecocks' struggles last week, when South Carolina allowed 27 unanswered points in the 41-34 loss to Mississippi State at home.
It was a shellacking basically from start to finish. Although the Gamecocks made it past Alabama's 30-yard line in each of their first two possessions, the drives resulted in a missed field goal and a failed fourth-down conversion attempt.
In the week leading up to this game, head coach Shane Beamer talked throughout the week about his team responding well to adversity. He was asked how his team plans to respond next week against Kentucky at home, and Beamer offered an answer that might rub South Carolina fans the wrong way when you just lost by 31 points.
"We fully expected to come in here and win this game," Beamer said via Gamecock Central at his postgame presser. Really disappointed with the way that we performed, coaches and players, tonight. So, zero doubt about how we will respond. We got the right character of people in that locker room. What we got to get fixed is not just responding with the mindset, but responding with much more consistent play than what we’re showing right now."
While of course, any coach expects his team to win every game when it comes out of the locker room. But Beamer's comments compared to just how poor the Gamecocks looked the entire game—as well as last week's struggles—suggests there might be a wide disconnect here.
There's a big difference between belief and reality. The problem is Beamer hasn't figured out how to get his team to connect those dots and make smart decisions to allow South Carolina to win games.
What's even worse, Beamer tried to point out that the Gamecocks getting 216 yards on the ground against Alabama, who hasn't allowed many rush yards so far this season, is some sort of achievement.
"There’s no moral victories," Beamer added via GC. "But nobody had run the ball on them. To come in here and run the ball tonight for over 200 yards again and have 419 yards of offense… But its simple in football: You lose a turnover battle, and you lose the explosive play battle and have as many balls thrown over your head as we did tonight, it’s hard to win."
216 yards of offense is pretty decent, but when it results in just two touchdowns all night, it's hard to see the positives. The Gamecocks looked like a team completely unprepared to meet the moment and win against an elite team on the road. That's what you have to do to survive in the SEC, and Beamer hasn't showed this team is capable of much of anything in the last couple of weeks.
If South Carolina plays like it did the last two weeks, even losing at home to Kentucky isn't far from the realm of possibility.
