They say the more things change, the more things stay the same. Unfortunately Gamecock fans felt that saying in the worst way, with a disappointing 41-34 home loss to Mississippi State in South Carolina's first SEC game of the season.
The final score made the game feel closer than it actually was, and the Gamecocks’ 16-0 lead in the second quarter feels like it may not have been real to some fans.
Despite a 4-8 season last year, there was plenty of optimism surrounding head coach Shane Beamer this offseason and the changes he made to both the roster and coaching staff. South Carolina’s first two blowout wins over Kent State and Towson proved relatively meaningless as the Gamecocks fell to 2-1 and 0-1 in SEC play against the Bulldogs.
Things didn’t truly get out of hand until the second half. Although MSU scored back to back touchdown runs in the second quarter, Matt Fuller’s seven-yard touchdown run gave the Gamecocks a 23-14 halftime lead.
In the second half, South Carolina’s offense sputtered to a halt. The defense had no answer for Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor, who threw for 251 yards and four touchdowns.
The third quarter perhaps encapsulates just how Mississippi State was able to take back the first-half momentum from South Carolina.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers threw back to back interceptions deep in South Carolina territory that allowed MSU to score on short fields with ease.
The Bulldogs scored on consecutive scoring drives to open the quarter, and added a 36-yard field goal to take a 31-23 lead. MSU added 10 more points in the fourth, as the Bulldogs scored 27 unanswered points midway through the fourth.
Things were so bad that some Gamecock fans chanted “Fire Beamer” in the fourth quarter.

South Carolina even out-possessed MSU 25:45 to 34:15, but ended up losing by what should have been multiple scores. On offense, the Gamecocks had to settle for field goals on four of their seven scoring drives.
The Gamecocks also had nine penalties for 98 yards. Despite a coaching staff overhaul and a roster featuring talented portal players and star returnees, Gamecock fans left Williams-Brice with the same bitter taste in their mouths as last season.
After the game, Beamer was adamant that despite the game feeling similar to ones from last season, he believes this is a different team:
"It’s a completely different team, Beamer said via Gamecock Central. "There’s a lot of guys that weren’t even here last year, and 2026 is a new year. And I get it. We blew a 16-point lead tonight, and it’s easy to look back and talk about the leads that we blew last year. It’s the story that’s going to be written. But this is a completely different team with unbelievable leadership, and I know they’ll respond the right way.”
Coach Beamer is coaching for his job this season. Having a massive second-half collapse at home early in the season doesn’t exactly bode confidence that he will turn things around. Not only did the game feel like the 4-8 Gamecocks from last season, it was a particularly glaring performance when considering the opponents South Carolina still has to play.
The Gamecocks go on the road next week to face No. 10 Alabama, as well as games against Texas A&M, Florida, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Georgia, to name a few.
Of course, one game doesn’t define any season, and there’s a chance that Mississippi State might just be a better team than we thought early in the season.
But if South Carolina plays like it did the rest of the season, Gamecocks fans are in for another excruciatingly long season.
