Starting as a true freshman in college football, especially at the offensive line position, isn't something you see too often. But one South Carolina Gamecock who could be pushing to do so is offensive lineman Darius Gray.

Gray has been in Columbia for only a few months, arriving on-campus over the summer. But he has made a big impression on head coach Shane Beamer and his staff in just a short time. During the Gamecocks' summer conditioning program, the 6-foot-3, 302-pound native of Virginia stood out.

"I’ve been doing this a while,” South Carolina offensive line coach Randy Clements said of Gray via The State newspaper. “And I don’t know if I’ve seen (a freshman) that far advanced as he is.”

The offensive lineman was rated in the class of 2026 as one of the most talented prospects in the country. According to the 247Sports Composite, he was rated as the No. 1 overall interior offensive lineman, and the No. 1 overall prospect out of Virginia. He played high school football out of St. Christopher's School in Richmond, Va.

According to his South Carolina bio, Gray even saw snaps in high school on the defensive side of the ball. In 2024, he had 50 total tackles with 17.5 for loss, helping lead his team to the state playoffs, per the school.

“Yeah, he’s pretty impressive," Coach Beamer said of Gray via Gamecock Central earlier this week. He really is. Just as a person… I mean, you forget he wasn’t even here for spring practice. He just showed up in the summertime, and the summer that he had was elite. What he was able to do physically in the summertime was really impressive as a true freshman. And then, what he is able to do so far in practice is impressive. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s four days in. There’s a lot of football, and he’s got a long ways to go. But the initial impressions are really good. He’s got his stuff together. It’s an impressive guy on and off the field."

Gray could see playing time early on

South Carolina is expected to release an official depth chart as the Gamecocks' Week 1 game against Kent State gets closer. The Gamecock starting offensive line is expected to be composed of the likes of star NC State transfer Jacarrius Peak at left tackle, Purdue transfer Hank Purvis at left guard and UCF transfer Carter Miller at center. ECU transfer Emmanuel Poku should slide into the right guard spot, with returning starter Shed Sarratt Jr. a right tackle.

But given how impressed the coaches have been with Gray early on, there's a good chance Gray could see some reps in the rotation at offensive line as the season gets closer.

Having a strong offensive line will be critical for Kendal Briles installing his new offensive scheme, as well as for returning quarterback LaNorris Sellers. Sellers took a career-high 43 sacks last season, and giving him time for plays to develop both helps in the passing and quarterback-run game, a big part of his success.

Obviously it is still early in South Carolina's fall camp, and there's no indication that South Carolina will have to start Gray early on. But with how impressive he's been in just a few short months, I wouldn't be surprised if we see more of the true freshman throughout the season.
