The South Carolina Gamecocks might be on the verge of landing a top-rated linebacker that is a local prospect. Over the weekend, three-star linebacker Jackson Ross released his final three schools, and the Gamecocks made the cut.Â
South Carolina is a finalist, as well as Vanderbilt and Texas Tech for Ross, who plays high school football out of Hammond school in Columbia, S.C. Ross released his final lists of schools via an Instagram post.Â
Obviously landing a local prospect like Ross would be great for South Carolina. In fact, the linebacker spoke with Gamecocks247 about what the interest from his home town school means to himÂ
"At first, my question with them was it legit or are they throwing an offer because it's an in-state kid they don't want to miss on," Ross said via the outlet. "But as the process has gone on, I've realized this is legit interest and they want me in the building. I fit in schematically.
"I think coach (Clayton) White and coach Trey Money have done a great job of not only breaking down their film with me, but also breaking down my own film with me and kind of showing the different types of things I'm doing here, the different types of plays I'm making here fit in with how they play their linebackers and what they're looking for with their linebackers. I think they've done a good job of kind of showing me how I fit in the defense."
Ross is coming off of an official visit with Vanderbilt, and he has one scheduled for Columbia on June 5. His visit to Texas Tech is set for June 12. Per the 247Sports Composite, he is listed as the No. 13 overall player from his home state of South Carolina.Â
His commitment could reportedly come in late June or early July. South Carolina could use the linebacker in its No. 34 overall ranked 2027 class.Â
