South Carolina football and head coach Shane Beamer wrapped up its spring football season on Saturday. Unfortunately, college football recruiting never sleeps, and the Gamecocks lost a key piece to its 2027 recruiting class the same day.

On Saturday, 4-star cornerback Aamaury Fountain, who had been verbally committed to South Carolina's 2027 class since January flipped to the Florida Gators' class and head coach Jon Sumrall. The flip was reported by Rivals' Hayes Fawcett:

With the flip, South Carolina's 2027 class drops to just three members, and is ranked No. 49th nationally and 12th in the SEC. Florida's class, meanwhile, jumped up to fifth in the conference and 17th nationally per 247Sports. Fountain is the nation's No. 26 ranked verbal commit in the country, and is ranked No. 23 out of his home state of Georgia. He plays his high school football out of Northside High School in Warner Robbins.

While the Gamecocks still have three-star receiver Jaiden Kelly-Murray, losing Fountain, one of the first couple of commitments to the 2027 class, isn't exactly ideal. Earlier this month, Fountain had confirmed an official visit to South Carolina in June, but it's unclear if he will keep that on the books.

Georgia was reportedly trying to flip Fountain late last month, but the Gators got the jump on the Peach State prospect. It's still quite early in the 2027 cycle, so this flip certainly doesn't define South Carolina's hops for its recruiting class. But Beamer will certainly have to make up some ground in the coming months with the loss.
