The South Carolina Gamecocks received some devastating injury news just over a week into fall camp. On Sunday evening, Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer announced that two pass-catchers in Jayden Gibson and Jayden Sellers sustained season-ending injuries during fall camp.
Per Beamer, both wide receivers suffered "lower leg" injuries during practice last week.Â
"I am extremely disappointed for both of these young men," South Carolina coach Shane Beamer said via ESPN in a statement. "I know how hard each of them has worked over the spring and summer in getting ready for 2026 to help our team. I have full confidence they will both overcome the adversity they're facing, and we will help them in whatever way we can throughout the rehab process moving forward."
Both guys were expected to be huge components of Kendal Briles' new offenses in 2026. Sellers, who is the younger brother of star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, had 22 receptions with 337 yards and a touchdowns last season, averaging 15.3 yards per catch. He also started to really click at the tailend of the season last year, getting 13 receptions for 242 yards in South Carolina's last three games.Â
Gibson transferred to the Gamecocks after spending his last two seasons at Oklahoma, where he had 15 receptions for 387 and five touchdowns.  Â
To say that this is a setback for South Carolina, which is coming off of a 4-8 season in 2025, is an understatement. Both guys are explosive playmakers who were expected to have breakout seasons behind the Gamecocks' returning star Nyck Harbor. Sellers losing both his younger brother and key teammate doesn't make it sting any less, either.Â
There was plenty of optimism surrounding Sellers returning along a re-tooled offensive line, as well as several weapons around him, including Gibson and Sellers. But obviously South Carolina has more playmakers outside of these two guys, as disappointing as these injuries are. Let's take a look at where the Gamecocks' receiver room now stands with the injuries.Â
What does South Carolina's new depth chart look like at receiver?Â
South Carolina will have to rely more heavily on Harbor, as well as returning receiver Mazeo Bennett Jr., who has 40 receptions for 339 yards with three touchdowns across his two seasons. Returning wideout DJ Black, who had 22 receptions for 273 yards with two touchdowns last season, will likely see more reps, as well.Â
The Gamecocks also added Purdue transfer Nitro Tuggle, who had 34 receptions for 500 yards with four touchdowns for the Boilermakers in 2025. Here's a look at South Carolina's projected depth chart with the injuries to Gibson and Sellers.Â
First team receiversÂ
- Nyck Harbor
- Nitro Tuggle
- Mazeo Bennett Jr.Â
Second team guys/depth reserves
- DJ Black
- Donavan Murph
- Lex Cyrus
- Malik Clark
- Jordon Gidron
- Charly Mullaly
Murph had 14 receptions for 197 yards with a touchdown last season. Clark, Gidron and Cyrus both took redshirts for the Gamecocks last year. Mullaly transferred from Holy Cross this offseason, where he had 336 yards with two scores across his two seasons.
Of course, injuries happen throughout college football each and every season. But losing a pair of key weapons on offense that were going to be key to rebuilding the offense certainly puts a damper on the offseason optimism in Columbia.Â
