The South Carolina Gamecocks football team has bolstered its linebacker corps by securing a commitment from Justin Okoronkwo, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound true freshman who previously played for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Okoronkwo, originally from Munich, Germany, entered the transfer portal last weekend and has now chosen to continue his collegiate career with the Gamecocks.

During his sole season at Alabama, Okoronkwo appeared in all 13 games, primarily contributing on special teams and as a defensive reserve. He recorded 14 tackles and half a tackle for loss. His athletic journey began in Germany, where he was involved in soccer and gymnastics before transitioning to American football approximately five years ago. His rapid development and impressive physical attributes garnered attention during the American college camp circuit two summers ago, leading to scholarship offers from institutions such as South Carolina, Michigan, and Penn State. Ultimately, he committed to Alabama.

Okoronkwo’s addition marks the second linebacker transfer for South Carolina, both of whom began their collegiate careers at Alabama. In December, the Gamecocks signed linebacker Shawn Murphy, who also transferred from Alabama.

This strategic move enhances South Carolina’s linebacker depth and brings a player with a diverse athletic background to the team. Fans can anticipate Okoronkwo’s unique skill set and international experience contributing to the Gamecocks’ defensive lineup in the upcoming season.
