South Carolina football opponent preview: Kent State Golden Flashes

With South Carolina's 2026 football season just a few short weeks away, it's time to take a closer look at the 2026 opponents. In the days leading up to the Gamecocks' Week 1 home opener against Kent State, we'll break down each and every team on South Carolina's 2026 schedule.

South Carolina has one of the hardest schedules in the country this season, as sixth-year head coach Shane Beamer looks to reload following a 4-8 season.

For starters, we'll break down South Carolina's first opponent, the Kent State Golden Flashes.

Opponent breakdown: Kent State

South Carolina will open the 2026 season at home against a non-conference opponent from the Mid-American Conference in the Kent State Golden Flashes.

It marks just the second all-time meeting between the two programs, with the last one coming in 1995. That year, South Carolina's offense put on a clinic, winning 77-14.

Kent State will be led by second-year head coach Mark Carney, who led his team to a 5-7 record in 2025. Carney had spent the 2023-2024 seasons as an assistant, coaching the tight ends and wide receivers in 2023 before getting the offensive coordinator job in 2024.

Under center, Kent State will be led by returning starting quarterback Dru DeShields. Although he battled with signal-caller Devin Kingman for reps last season, Kingman hitting the transfer portal this offseason gives the nod to DeShields.

The junior threw for 2,030 yards with 18 touchdowns and three interceptions last season, adding three rushing touchdowns. He gets a pair of starting receivers back from last season, including Wayne Harris and Ardell Banks, who combined for 588 yards with three touchdowns last season.

At running back, Kent State has to replace starting tailback Gavin Garcia, but Cincinnati transfer Jakorion Caffey is expected to fill that gap nicely.

Overall, Kent State returns six starters on offense from last season.

On defense, Coach Carney will be looking for some massive improvement from a unit that allowed 516 yards per game and 44.1 points per game last season.

The secondary was young last year, composed mostly of freshmen and sophomores. Safety Joel Cordoba will be one of those veterans returning. Last season as a true freshman, he had 68 total tackles. Kent State also returns linebacker Sayed Abuhamdeh, who had 38 tackles and two pass breakups.

Key statistics to know

The Golden Flashes will have a tough task going on the road to open with South Carolina. Kent State all-time is just 0-21 straight-up against SEC opponents, with an average losing score of 45-9.

South Carolina will be eager to get off to an efficient start offensively, as it'll be the first time Kendal Briles gets to debut his new offense. LaNorris Sellers is also expected to look much more comfortable running the system, as he returns the likes of leading receiver Nyck Harbor and running back Matt Fuller.

Coach Beamer is 4-1 in season openers, losing only to then-No. 23 North Carolina in 2023. South Carolina has also won its last three straight over MAC opponents, winning by an average score of 40-5.
