Shane Beamer tries defending his OC hires at South Carolina but no one is buying it

It has been a roller coaster of a ride at the offensive coordinator position for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Since head coach Shane Beamer took over the program just four years ago in 2021, he has hired and fired three OCs. Now, he has onto offensive coordinator No. 4 as wide receivers coach Mike Furrey steps into the role.

During a recent press conference, Beamer was asked to explain his inconsistency at the position, and the Gamecocks' head coach immediately put his defenses up.

Shane Beamer gets cagey about OC hires and fires

"I push back on the narrative that... we, or I, haven't gotten these offensive coordinator hires 'right,'" Beamer said. "Have we been consistent enough on offense and efficient enough on offense? Absolutely not, but let's not act like we've brought in three coordinators and we've just fired all of 'em and we just threw up our hands."

Except... that's exactly what Beamer and the South Carolina football program have done. Over a four-year stretch, they hired and fired more offensive coordinators than most head coaches will see during their entire tenure with a team.

South Carolina offensive coordinators under Shane Beamer

  • Dowell Loggains, 2023-24
  • Mike Shula, 2025
  • Mike Furrey (interim), 2025-present

The offensive coordinator role isn't exactly a position that you can figure out through trial and error. A football team needs consistency from its OC, and going through four guys within four and a half years isn't sustainable for any program.

Beamer was correct when he said that the South Carolina offense hasn't been efficient or consistent enough during his time with the team. Despite having an elite quarterback like LaNorris Sellers in the backfield, the Gamecocks continue to sputter out on the offensive side of the ball.

The Gamecocks' head coach went on to defend every single OC he had hired so far, yet nobody is buying his argument (whether they're a South Carolina fan or not).

Yes, his previous hires have gone on to other roles in the world of football (successful or not), but he continues to bring in guys who have yet to successfully run the SC offense.

Under Beamer, the Gamecocks have gone 32-28, with just three winning seasons so far, and are currently 3-6 overall with an abysmal 1-6 record against SEC opponents. His hires haven't been acceptable, and his repeated excuses aren't either.

While Furrey may only be in the role temporarily, Beamer's next hire has to be successful, or Beamer himself might be the next guy on the chopping block.
