Shane Beamer's quote about LaNorris Sellers should scare every college football team
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer is definitely one who will give credit where credit is due, and you can tell the love he has for his young quarterback. While being interviewed on the field after No. 15 South Carolina's humongous win over No. 12 Clemson, the fourth-year head coach spoke very highly of his quarterback, even saying he should be a part of a certain award conversation.
Beamer started out talking about his redshirt freshman quarterback with a short and sweet statement.
"That kid's (LaNorris Sellers) is the best player in the country," Beamer said on the field with fans chanting "Beamer Bowl" behind him.
Sellers was truly one of the best, if not the best, players on the field in this game. Even with an early fumble and a fourth-quarter interception, Sellers literally put the team on his back and carried them to the win. Sellers may not have had flashy numbers when it came to passing with just 164 passing yards, but he dominated on the ground with 166 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Beamer continues to absolutely back his quarterback, even calling out the Heisman Trophy committing and even challenging them to tell him who is better than Sellers at this point in the season.
"He may not have been in the Heisman Trophy conversation before today," Beamer said. "If that guy is not in the Heisman Trophy conversation, I don't know who is."
Sellers have been so impressive during South Carolina's now six-game win streak, which ties their longest win streak since the 2013 season. His growth throughout the season, which included an injury that took him out of the LSU game that the Gamecocks ended up losing, has been a big reason for South Carolina's late-season success and put towards the College Football Playoff.
In his on-field interview, Beamer even admitted that the team "tried to screw it up," obviously meaning the team gave the ball away and didn't always back up Sellers, but the South Carolina native, who grew up a UNC fan, was able to get through it all.
"One of our players told me after that touchdown run, 'this guy has got something special inside of him,' and he does," Beamer said.
The one thing that should scare every college football, and especially SEC teams, is that Sellers has at least three more years of eligibility left, and it doesn't seem like he is ready to leave Columbia just yet. This is just the start for LaNorris Sellers, and if South Carolina doesn't make it to the College Football Playoff, he has more to prove in a bowl game, but if they do, he just might lead the Gamecocks on a run.
