Shane Beamer buyout: How much would it cost to fire South Carolina's head coach?

The South Carolina Gamecocks dropped to 2-1 on the season after losing 41-34 at home to the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Although the Gamecocks led 16-0 early in the first half, South Carolina's defense allowed 27 unanswered points at one point. The loss felt similar to how games last season for South Carolina went, when the Gamecocks finished 4-8. 

Of course, much of the blame for the loss falls on the shoulders of sixth-year head coach Shane Beamer, who is now 16-41 in SEC games.  Things were so dire in front of the Gamecocks home crowd in Williams-Brice that fan started chanting "Fire Beamer" audibly from the stands: 

Now that the idea of firing their head coach is at least in some fans' minds, let's take a look at how much it would cost South Carolina to move on from the embattled head coach. 

How much is Shane Beamer's buyout? 

It would be a pretty hefty buyout that the Gamecocks would owe Beamer if the school fires him this season. His buyout for the rest of South Carolina's season is set at $27.9 million. But if Beamer is fired on Dec. 31 right before the end of the year, that number drops to $22.1 million according to Greenville Online.

In January 2025, Beamer signed a new contract with the school that increased his annual salary to $8.15 million, including several incentives. The contract extension gave him another five years, putting him through the 2030 season.  

While South Carolina athletic director Jeremiah Donati did not hire Beamer, it wouldn't be surprising if he makes a change with Beamer midseason, especially depending on how the rest of the season goes.  

Beamer admitted before the season that he knows he is squarely on the hot seat. But his team suffering the loss at home before some of the toughest games for South Carolina even begin doesn't bode well. As for Beamer, after the MSU game, he at least is confident that his team can rebound:  

 “We work way too hard and emphasize it way too much to not play better in the second half like we did," Beamer said after the game via Gamecock Central. "I mean, we’ve talked about it all year that, in this league, man, it’s a four-quarter game every week. You see that when you just look around the scores in this league. Mississippi State was in a bunch of them last year in the fourth quarter, and we were in a bunch of them in the fourth quarter. Tonight, it didn’t go our way. But we’ll correct it, and I know our guys will respond the right way."

That rebound will have to come quick, as South Carolina is set to go on the road to face the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide in front of a hostile Bryant-Denny Stadium crowd on Saturday night. Beamer is 0-2 against the Tide in his career as South Carolina's head coach.
