The 2026 college football season is still a good five months away. But the offseason never stops, and that includes coaches building out their respective coaching staffs.
For South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer, he is entering a do-or-die Year Five season in 2026. The Gamecocks finished 4-8 last season, and second-to-last in the SEC. Earlier this week, Beamer added a veteran coach with Super Bowl and NFL experience to bolster his defensive staff.
According to a new coaching profile on Gamecocks.com, Beamer has added Dre Bly to his staff as a defensive assistant in March 2026. Bly started his collegiate coaching experience at his alma mater, North Carolina, from 2019-22, where he coached cornerbacks for the Tar Heels.
Since then, he has spent most of his coaching career at the NFL level. In 2023, he was the cornerbacks coach for Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions as their cornerbacks coach. In 2024, he returned back to college to coach the Charlotte 49ers under former head coach Biff Poggi. Bly was a defensive assistant for the 49ers.
This past year, Bly went back to the NFL, coaching on Aaron Glenn's inaugural staff with the New York Jets. Bly was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Jets, coaching the likes of Sauce Gardner, Malachi Moore and Minkah Fitzpatrick. The Jets finished 3-14 in 2025, as New York's secondary allowed 7.5 yards per pass attempt last season.
Bly has an impressive NFL career as a former cornerback. The former UNC corner was drafted 41st overall in the second round by the St. Louis Rams during the 1999 NFL Draft. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Rams during his rookie season that year, as the Rams defeated the Titans 23–16 as a backup corner. Bly also played in Super Bowl XXXVI with the Rams, his team falling 20-17 to the New England Patriots in 2002.

Bly played with the Rams through 2002, before spending time with the Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions before returning in Nov. 2011. He was a first-team All-Pro with the Lions in 2003, and went to the 2003 and 2004 Pro Bowls.
In college, Bly was equally as impressive playing under head coach Mack Brown. Playing for the Tar Heels from 1995-1998, he was named the ACC's Rookie of the Year in 1996. As a redshirt freshman that year, he led the nation with 11 interceptions on the season. He was a first-team All-American in 1998, and was a three-time First-Team All-ACC member from 1996-1998. He helped UNC win back-to-back Gator Bowls and double-sigit win seasons in 1996 and 1997.
Bly reportedly played against played against Gamecocks defensive coordinator Clayton White when the two were in college, White playing at NC State.
For a South Carolina defense that finished 10th in the league in total defense last season, Bly brings some big-time experience to Beamer's staff. He should be able to help on the recruiting trail as well, given his connections to the Carolina areas. Bly confirmed he was joining the Gamecocks' staff with re-posting the news on X:
