After assembling three consecutive top 20 recruiting classes, Shane Beamer has had a bit of a tough go in the 2026 recruiting cycle. South Carolina’s 2026 class currently sits at No. 58 in the country with just 10 commits, but the Gamecocks could be on the rise soon with the pending announcement of four-star wide receiver Somourian Wingo.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound pass catcher from St. Augustine, Florida, is scheduled to announce his commitment on Thursday, July 17, with Miami, Florida, and South Carolina as his finalists. Wingo is the 22nd-ranked WR in the 2026 class and the 156th-ranked player in the country. If he chooses the Gamecocks, he would become the fourth-highest ranked player in Beamer’s 2026 class.

Star quarterback LaNorris Sellers likely won’t still be around in Columbia by the time Wingo would arrive, and his potential early departure for the NFL puts even more pressure on Beamer and his staff to land offensive playmakers. With his rushing ability, Sellers is an offense unto himself, but his successor, likely Ohio State transfer Air Noland, almost certainly won’t have the same game-breaking ability.

Without a floor-raising QB, at least early in Noland’s career, South Carolina will need more from its pass-catchers to reach the same level of efficiency that fans saw from the Sellers-led offense during the Gamecocks’ six-game win streak to end the 2024 regular season. That’s been a clear priority for the staff on the recruiting trail.

The 2025 class, which ranked 18th-best in the country and featured 26 commits, included five total wide receivers and four among the top seven highest-rated recruits in the class. Malik Clark, Donovan Murph, Brian Rowe Jr., and Lex Cyrus will provide crucial depth on the outside for Sellers this season and will develop into the core of the South Carolina passing game in the future. If Wingo commits on Thursday, the 2026 class could provide nearly as much high-level talent to the position group.

Four-star wide receiver Sequel Patterson is currently the fourth-highest ranked player in the 2026 class as a top 200 player in the country. Wingo’s jump-ball winning athleticism and lengthy frame would pair nicely with the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Swiss army knife, Patterson, who is an electric playmaker with the ball in his hands.
