The WNBA season is in full swing, and just as the summer temperatures are heating up, so is the league. Although it's still relatively early in the season, there are several big games on tap for Wednesday evening.Â
This year, South Carolina has a program-record 12 former players playing for WNBA teams, which is certainly a nice recruiting pitch for Gamecock head coach Dawn Staley. On Wednesday evening during some league midweek action, a number of South Carolina players are suiting up.Â
First, Kamilla Cardoso and the Chicago Sky are taking on the 10-4 New York Liberty at home, as part of the WNBA Commissioner's Cup. Cardoso is leading Chicago in rebounds so far this season, getting 8.6 per game. She is also third on the team in points per game (12.1). The Sky-Liberty game tips off at 8 p.m. ET, and will air live on USA Network.Â
Also part of the Commissioner's Cup is the 10 p.m. game between the Dallas Wings and the Golden State Valkyries. Both teams enter 9-5 on the season, and the Valkyries have won their last three straight games. Former Gamecock Laeticia Amihere will be looking to get back into Golden State's regular rotation, averaging just four points per game. Fans can stream the game via WNBA's League Pass.Â
Out west, the Los Angeles Sparks will be taking on the red-hot Minnesota Lynx at home. The Lynx have been led by rookie Olivia Miles, who is averaging 18.1 points per game through 12 games. Los Angeles rookie Ta'Niya Latson will be looking to get some game reps during this one.
And the reigning WNBA MVP A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces continue their title defense against the struggling 4-11 Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night. Wilson has been playing lights out all season, averaging 25.6 points per game with another nine rebounds. She will be hungry to rebound after scoring 18 points in a shocking 96-66 loss to the Wings on Monday night. That game will air live on USA Network as well as CNBC.Â
And last but certainly not least, Zia Cooke and the Seattle Storm will be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Portland Fire at home. Cooke is averaging eight points per game with 1.9 rebounds per game.Â
It should be a fun night watching Gamecock stars across the league!
