The South Carolina Gamecocks suffered some big losses at the receiver position early in fall camp. Just over a week after South Carolina began preparing for the season, sixth-year head coach Shane Beamer announced that receivers Jayden Sellers and Jayden Gibson would be out for the season after both guys suffered lower-leg injuries.

The news is a blow to South Carolina's offense at receiver, who will now have to turn more heavily to returning veterans like Nyck Harbor Harbor, as well Mazeo Bennett Jr., DJ Black and Purdue transfer Nitro Tuggle.

One other guy who could see the field early on in his career with the injuries is true freshman receiver Sequel Patterson. Although the Fort Mill., S.C. native has been on campus for just a couple of months, he is already turning heads in practice.

Sixth-year head coach Shane Beamer had high praise for Patterson just a couple weeks into the Gamecocks' fall camp.

“From what I’ve seen, he’s an electric, explosive guy," Beamer said via Gamecock Central. "He’s a guy that when the ball is in his hands, he has an ability to, you know, really make you miss, and is extremely explosive. [We] knew that in high school, knew that watching him play basketball, and then you see that on the football field. So the skill set is absolutely there. The explosiveness is absolutely there."

Beamer added that since he was not with the team during spring football, figuring out the offense has been a bit of a learning curve for him. But he has been spending extra time with receivers coach Mike Furrey, as well.

"I’m excited about his future here," Beamer continued. "His ability, and he’s a guy that just continues to get better and have an opportunity to, you know, help us this year to continue on the track that he’s on.”

Patterson was a highly-touted recruit coming out of Indian Land High School. Per the 247Sports Composite, he ranked as the No. 13 overall athlete in the class of 2026, and was the No. 8 overall player from his home state of South Carolina.

Across two seasons tracked by MaxPreps, he had 128 receptions for 1,764 yards with 17 touchdowns, averaging an electric 13.8 yards per catch.  He also saw plenty of reps in the running game, getting 99 carries for 606 carries with six scores, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. On special teams, he had over 300 yards in kick and punt returns.

He played both football and basketball in high school, as well.

But Coach Beamer wasn't the only one impressed with Patterson early in fall camp. Patterson's quarterback, South Carolina star LaNorris Sellers, also complimented the receiver's had high praise for his true freshman receiver:

“Sequel is athletic, fast [he] can jump run, do whatever you need, find open grass," Sellers said. "Get the ball in his hands in open space and he could probably go the distance.”

While obviously Patterson is still a freshman, and there's been no indication that he is ready to see significant game reps early in the season. But his athleticism is already standing out, and the more comfortable he gets in South Carolina's offense, the more we could see of the true freshman.
