Seattle Seahawks S Nick Emmanwori gets injury setback as training camp begins

Former South Carolina Gamecocks safety and Seattle Seahawks star Nick Emmanwori got some unfortunate, and somewhat surprising, injury news on Monday.Seattle is preparing to begin training camp as the Seahawks look to defend their Super Bowl title. 

The Seahawks placed Emmanwori on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as veterans were expected to report for training camp on July 24. It's unclear what the nature of Emmanwori's injury is at this time, and he is on the list along with running back Kenny McIntosh and cornerback Tyrone Broden: 

Emmanwori, who finished his rookie season with the Seahawks last year, dealt with ankle injuries a couple times last season. In fact, he missed the Seahawks' first three games of the 2025 regular season due to an ankle injury. And before the Super Bowl in February, he also was briefly placed on Seattle's injury list with an ankle injury, but started and played the entire game. It's unclear if an ankle injury is what put Emmanwori on the PUP list. 

This is a big blow for Emmanwori, who solidified himself as an elite defender during his rookie season last year. In fact, in a recent poll with NFL coaches, execs and scouts, Emmanwori is considered to be the No. 6 overall best safety across all 32 teams.  He played in 15 games for Seattle last season with 11 starts, helping the Seahawks defense bring a Super Bowl to the franchise for the first time since 2014. 

During his rookie season, he had 94 total tackles with 2.5 sacks and nine quarterback hits. Seattle drafted Emmanwori in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting him 35th overall. Across his three seasons at South Carolina, he finished with 244 total tackles with 11 passes defended and six interceptions. He was a three-star safety coming out of high school in Irmo, S.C. per 247Sports, rated as No. 6 overall safety out of South Carolina.

Emmanwori was a versatile guy on defense for the Seahawks, seeing reps both in the slot, in man coverage downfield and sometimes as a rusher off the edge. 

"We've never really had a player like him," Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald said of Emmanwori in Dec. of last year. "So we are kind of making it up as we go to a certain extent. I hate to admit that, but we kind of are."

Hopefully Emmanwori's injury isn't too severe, and he can return back to Seattle's training camp soon. There may be more to come over the next few days regarding the nature of Emmanwori's injury, but for now, there's not a lot out there as far as the severity or the nature of his injury.  

As Seattle continues to go through the training camp over the next few weeks, the Seahawks begin preseason play on Aug. 15 against the Dallas Cowboys. The team will open the 2026 NFL regular season  on Wednesday, Sept. 9 in a Super Bowl rematch against the New England Patriots.
