The South Carolina Gamecocks lost a spot on a WNBA roster in a way no fan wants. On Thursday evening, the Portland Fire announced that former Gamecock Sania Feagin had torn her ACL and would be out for the entire rest of the 2026 season.

Feagin had been waived by the Sparks in late June, as the team had to make way for Kiana Williams. Just a few days later, she was picked up by the Portland Fire on a developmental contract. The injury news is another tough break to her 2026 season, as she missed several games with the Sparks at the beginning of the season due to a separate leg injury.

“Really unfortunate news,” Portland head coach Alex Sarama said via On3Sports of Feagin's injury. “(We) especially love how Sania integrated with the group and learning the principles, learning the playbook, and really gelling with her teammates. I think everyone has been incredibly supportive and we’re going to be here to support Sania.

"She’s going to get the best rehab with our performance team. It’s still a case of still believing in her. We want Sania around because she’s going to learn from being around the group every day, learning from film. It also means she’s going to get the best care possible with early-stage return to play.”

Feagin has spent the last two seasons in the WNBA. She was drafted by the Sparks in the second round of the 2025 WNBA Draft with the No. 21 overall pick. Over her first two seasons in Los Angeles, she wasn't able to match the production she had in college with the Gamecocks. Over two years, she played in just 19 games, averaging 1.1 points per game with 0.6 rebounds.

She was at South Carolina from 2021-2025, and was on the Gamecocks' national championship team in 2024. Her last season at South Carolina was her best yet, as she started in all 39 games for the Gamecocks and averaged 8.1 points per game with 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

The Portland Fire is one of two expansion teams in the WNBA this season, along with the Toronto Tempo. Led by guard Carla Lite and forward Bridget Carleton, Feagin was expected to learn a lot in her developmental contract.

Per the terms of the league's developmental contracts, players are allowed to practice and travel with the team all season. Players can also play in up to 12 games during the regular season.

Hopefully Feagin can get a speedy recovery, and Gamecock fans are wishing her nothing but the best in her rehab process.
